Linchpins are everywhere: Worldwide meetup

by Sandra Walter on June 13, 2010

linchpinAs a writer and painter, I spend most of my creative time alone. When meetups occur that coincide with my interests, I get nervous and excited about crossing paths with kindred spirits. Monday, June 14th’s Worldwide “Linchpins are Everywhere” Meetup is no exception. I read Seth Godin’s Linchpin a few months ago, right before I left my day job. No book would have been more energizing for me at that moment than Linchpin. It described and reaffirmed my priorities and the rationalization behind my work ethic, and for the first time in a long time, made me feel less alone in the quest to change the status quo.

Big dreams take big hearts, but dreams are more likely to become reality if a big creative soul is involved. Seth breaks down the mechanics of what a Linchpin thinks, does, and delivers. Delivery, or “shipping” as he coins it, is one of the keys to being an effective Linchpin. But what fascinated me was the artist angle he used throughout the book: Linchpins, those irreplaceable minds who see every angle of a choice made at an organization and can master the fallout and success of that decision, are artists. Seth effectively notates the evidence that creative minds are the standard for new business, and that the cog; the cubicle-dwelling, time-card-punching, stay-under-the-radar employee, is quickly becoming extinct as the successful modern business model changes (and it is changing drastically, and may I add a “thank God” and sigh of relief here.)

For someone like myself who writes about seemingly esoteric things (esoteric to lizard brains – thanks again to Seth for that fantastic term), this shift in business consciousness is a true confirmation that the times indeed are changing, again, and that single individuals can make a big impact. If you are a Linchpin at your organization, come out on Monday and meet some fellow movers and shakers. Details on International locations can be found here.
